Turns out the middle rack was just too narrow to lie cells flat. Vertical they will stick up a little, but this could work. BUT, it leaves me a couple cells short even after building the additional box in trunk. This orientation, even after modifying the rack would leave almost NO clearance to hood... not looking good. ;(
